Art has been a companion, sometimes silent and brooding, sometimes nagging, sometimes active, but mostly wanting to be heard and seen.
After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts at the Maryland Institute of Art in 1975, David spent a year traveling in Europe on a shoestring budget, seeking out many of the art museums and relevant sights in numerous European countries.
A chance spring semester opportunity to study with an American sculptor in his studio in Rome led to the desire to learn more about sculpture in Europe and David went on to study at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin, Germany, receiving his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts.
He returned to the US not only with a degree, but also a wife. Besides teaching sculpture at the Putney School in Vermont, and later on at a college in Gardner, MA., he found himself moving across New England, renovating houses, planting gardens, and then became the owner/operator of a Motel and Country Store in Maine.
Raising a family and earning a living, did not allow for much time to pursue his art. But after the children left the house and a move to North Carolina, David started sculpting and exhibiting in Solo and Group Shows again in 2013 and continues to expand his catalog of work and pursuing opportunities to exhibit. In 2017 David decided to explore the desert and mountain landscapes of the West and moved with his wife to Kingman, Arizona, where new inspirations for sculptures and paintings await. He has been fortunate to find the artist community of the KCA Gallery in Kingman and has been able to exhibit some of his work there.
What has been dormant, yet waiting and nagging, is coming to the forefront again and has been resulting in new work featuring the human figure and ancient forms. His preferred medium is paper pulp, used in innovative ways. Since experiencing the ever changing desert landscapes of the West, David has been inspired to start up painting again as well.
