The work I have done recently reflects my interest in early Mediterranean culture, from clay and stone to bronze and then iron.
This was the transition time from nomadic, agrarian culture to urban civilization; a time of the shift from nature goddesses to the authority of the male gods that establish urban structures which organize and divide people into specialized roles. This allowed for the birth of civilization but the wisdom of humans being part of nature was suppressed.
Increasingly, nature seems to be at the mercy of humans. In remembering our roots, I see a chance to reflect on our place as humans on this planet, and an urgent need to reestablish the connection before nature takes its ultimate revenge and starts over.
I work with Paper Mache/paper pulp and additives. It is recycled materials, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly. The versatility of this medium allows for a great variety of textures and shapes. Adding metal paints and patinas sculpting works of fine art that create tension and juxtaposition of the appearance of weight and lightness, of stone and metal versus the paper medium, of affordable and precious, of recycled materials and timeless themes.
